Fly Fishing the Provo River From the Cabin: A Local's Guide

If you fly fish, the Provo River needs no introduction. What surprises most first-time guests is just how close the Provo Canyon Treehouse sits to the water — the river runs right behind the cabin, and the blue-ribbon Lower Provo is steps away. You can be casting before your coffee gets cold.

The water out the back door

The Lower Provo River is one of Utah’s premier trout fisheries — a designated blue-ribbon stretch holding an estimated 3,500+ fish per mile. Expect wild brown and rainbow trout in the 16–20 inch range, with the occasional larger fish for anyone willing to work for it.

The Lower Provo River winding through the canyon near the cabin

It fishes year-round, but the dry-fly action is best when the bugs are up:

  • Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) — late spring into summer
  • Blue-Winged Olives (BWOs) — spring and again in fall
  • Caddis and midges — reliable through the colder months

Nymphing under an indicator produces all year; streamers move the bigger browns in low light.

Beyond the river: nearby still water

Lake fishing on a nearby reservoir

When you want to mix it up, three reservoirs are a short drive:

  • Deer Creek Reservoir (≈8 min) — rainbow trout and smallmouth bass
  • Jordanelle Reservoir (≈30 min) — trophy brown trout and smallmouth
  • Strawberry Reservoir (≈45 min) — Bonneville cutthroat and kokanee salmon

Why base your trip here

Plenty of anglers come to fish the Provo and end up staying with family in town — then spend the trip driving back and forth at odd hours. Staying on the river instead means:

  • Dawn starts without a commute — walk out and fish the morning rise
  • Room to dry gear — a mudroom-friendly entry, a deck, and laundry on site
  • Space for the whole group — the cabin sleeps up to 12, so the non-fishing crew has plenty to do (hot tub, hiking, Bridal Veil Falls) while you’re on the water
  • A fraction of guided-lodge pricing — all the access, none of the resort markup

It’s the rare spot that keeps both the anglers and the family happy.
